I focus on advancing views of racial identity and their normative implications, particularly the complexities of non-paradigmatic forms of racial identification. While philosophy has made some strides in understanding racial identity, existing theoretical frameworks often fall short in addressing its nuanced and evolving nature. My work introduces a novel perspective—a Virtue-Based Approach to Racial Identity (V-BARI)—which offers a critical update to these frameworks.
My work investigates the structural and institutional factors that shape our understanding of racial identity. I conduct normative assessments of non-paradigmatic racial identities to deepen our comprehension of identifications beyond mainstream conceptions.
Current projects include an exploration of the ethics of reparations in the U.S., where I apply V-BARI to determine who is entitled to reparations based on localized efforts. Additionally, I am examining how racial identity intersects with Artificial Intelligence in dating apps, investigating the racial biases embedded in algorithms and their ethical implications.
